This news story is about the ‘controversial’ ad for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The video shown below depicts a soldier, who served in Afghanistan, on a news show talking about why the Black Ops ad is offensive (which, in my opinion, it’s not) .This story is old but it peaked my interest because of how many facts the guest speaker gets completely wrong! This is almost hilarious because he clearly didn’t take the time to check his facts so he comes off looking like a complete moron.
The first, and biggest, problem is the fact that they keep pressing the fact that the ads tag line is, “anybody can be a solider”, At first glance you see where the guy is coming from, not everyone can be a soldier and war clearly isn’t something to joke about. If you take a closer look at the ad (not shown in its entirety in the video) the tag line instead reads, “There’s a soldier in all of us” which is obviously completely different. You could make an argument against that tag line but I don’t think it’s as big of a deal.
Another problem I have is the fact that the guest speaker keeps saying that the ad is offensive because the people in the ad are using “real weapons“they are obviously props but I think what he’s saying is that the ad is attempting to replicate a battlefield scenario, but even that’s incorrect as the ad is trying to replicate the game play of Black Ops in a live action setting.
My final complaint is that the speaker mentions the fact that the people in the ad that are carrying ak-47s are behaving like insurgents on an actual battlefield would. I think this I over analyzing it, it’s an ad so it’s trying to sell a product it’s not some random video someone made in their backyard. Not only that but the guy claims he’s watched the ad “over a dozen times” if this was true he would know what the actual tag line was!
In conclusion, the interview was a mess. It’s like having children make rules; there are some coherent rules sprinkled about, but in the end it’s just a complete disaster.
